The Kansas Association of Broadcasters announced today that KTKA 49 ABC had received the top honor of Station of the Year. This is the second consecutive year and the third time in four years that KTKA has received this media award. KTKA was named the winner in the Medium Market Television category.
Our newsroom swept the category of In-depth News Reporting for the following stories:
- Sex offender list enough? Some parents say no
- Some Topeka residents own Houses from Hell
- Secret meetings held before airport director resigned Note: (See other winning MTAA stories inside that story.)
Ike Walker, News Director for KTKA, comments on the news department’s effort that earned us the prestigious award of Station of the Year for the second straight year.
“When you win awards for news in six categories and you sweep the In-Depth News Reporting category, it naturally speaks to the incredibly talented and dedicated staff that we have in the 49 ABC newsroom. To win the Station of the Year Award two years in a row shows the consistency of our news product and the impact that we are making in our community and in the lives of our viewers.”
KTKA also won the Tony Jewell Award, a honor that recognizes community service. We earned that honor for our "Oprah's Big Give" initiative. Read stories from that campaign here.
The community service award was one that General Manager Kathy Mohn was particularly proud of.
"Naturally, I am proud of the advocacy brand of news KTKA provides every day and the station’s commitment to the communities we have been serving in Northeast Kansas. Everyone inside the station believes in what we do and what we will continue to do. To have our work recognized by our professional peers two years in a row is an incredible endorsement and one we all treasure," she said. "I am especially proud of the Tony Jewell Award for Community Service for our Oprah’s Big Give Campaign where we raised over $100,000 in donations and in-kind services to help five families. That project exemplifies what can be accomplished when a community works together towards a common cause. We proudly share the Tony Jewell Award with Let’s Help and all the individuals and companies who helped with 'Oprah’s Big Give!'"
KTKA 49 ABC News produces Good Morning Kansas, 49 News at 11 a.m., 49 News at 6 and 10 p.m. 49 News has two weekend casts at 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday nights.

Too bad the station is being sold. Don't blink now, 49 will be gone soon.
