No. 25 Kansas rolls past Kent State

Kansas 87, Kent State 60

In its first ever matchup, Kansas (5-1) men's basketball used a balanced scoring attack to run past the 2008 Mid-American Conference Champion Kent State (3-3), 87-60, Monday night at Allen Fieldhouse. Junior Sherron Collins scored 16 of his team-high 19 points to lead the Jayhawks. The triumph over the Golden Flashes was KU's 28th straight home victory.

Four Jayhawks scored in double figures with freshman Marcus Morris and sophomore Cole Aldrich each recording double-doubles. Morris notched 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Aldrich added 10 points and 13 boards. Freshman Tyshawn Taylor was the other Jayhawk in double figures with 12 points.

Kansas used a 16-2 run midway through the first half to gain a 37-24 halftime advantage. In the first half, the Jayhawks forced 14 turnovers resulting in 19 points.

Redshirt sophomore Brady Morningstar had a career-high four steals, all coming in the first half. Taylor's three steals were also a career beset for the freshman guard.

In the second half, both teams combined for 30 fouls, 18 of which were called on Kent State. Included in the second half's 30 fouls were two technical fouls, one on each squad.

Kent State would stay within striking distance until a Taylor three pointer sparked an 11-0 Jayhawk run to give Kansas a 22 point lead with 11:49 remaining in the game.

KU shot a season-high 88.9 percent from the free throw line, including 92.3 percent in the second half. KU restricted Kent State to 37.7 percent shooting for the game.

Kent State also had four players in double figures. Chris Singletary led the Golden Flashes with 13 points and nine rebounds. Mike McKee added 11 points. Rashad Woods and Anthony Simpson each scored 10.

With the victory, Kansas improved to 9-1 all-time against Mid-American Conference foes.

Kansas will return to the floor Wednesday night to face the New Mexico State Aggies at Allen Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. Wednesday's home tilt will be KU's third of six straight home games.
