City Chat addresses email concerns

The city is now asking for the public's opinion on how they process e-mails. It's right on the heels of our 49 News Investigation, "Leading in Secret".
They've posted a question on their website under City Chat-- the forum posts different questions about topics that are going on in the city and invites Topekans to respond with questions or comments.
Here's today's question: What kind of e-mail correspondence does the City of Topeka keep?
The city goes on to answer the question by saying a lot of the same things city information officer David Bevens said in a letter we received yesterday... defending the city's practice of deleting emails and justifying it by citing cost.
The exact wording online is: "City employees are not required to maintain all e-mails on the computer system. With 900 e-mail users at the City, it would be a monumental, expensive, and not really a feasible task, to store ALL e-mails we receive."
As we found in our investigation, it is a state law that cities and other government agencies manage and store their electronic records.

It is not the LAW to keep e-mails. You are as WRONG as Buffalo Bob was on the veto. Both of you should keep your noses in something you know about. Read the state statutes.
