Let there be dogs.
Michelle and Scott Hummel are obvious dog-lovers.
They were devastated when their newest little pup was stolen last week.
"To think that something could happen that quick is just unbelievable."
Michelle Hummel ran into a gas station to get a cup of cappuccino. She was in the store for about a minute. When she came out, her car and her dog were gone.
"You don't expect your car to be gone when you walk outside and then it was worried about her, because she only weighs about three pounds and it was 22 degrees that day and I was afraid somebody would just dump her out," Michelle said.
Michelle left her car running at the gas station so little JD wouldn't get cold.
But JD is no guard dog and thieves took off with him and the car.
The family had just purchased the Chihuahua-Pekingese mix for $900 two days earlier.
They're thankful police helped find him.
"They told me their main mission that night was to get our puppy back for us, but they still hadn't found the car," Scott Hummel said. "I told them I was really happy and about that time, my stepdaughter came out and she was really pleased."
While their car was eventually found abandoned at a Topeka church, it was this little guy they really cared about.
"You can replace the car and the items inside, but (you get attached to these guys pretty fast), yeah."
While JD tries to show his siblings who's boss, Michelle says she'll never leave him vulnerable again.
Police say the dog-napping is under investigation.
Our 49 News Crime Tracker found there have been at least 71 auto thefts in Topeka this year. Many cars are stolen in Topeka - because the owners leave keys inside.
