Former KU women's basketball coach hopes to get people fit through Web site

VIDEO:

She led the Lady Jayhawks on the basketball court for more than 30 years. As BoomerGirl.com editor Cathy Hamilton reports,Marion Washington, now, wants to lead the country to better health through the Internet.

Marian Washington has motivated hundreds of college athletes to get moving during her long career.

Now, the former KU Women's basketball coach, hopes to inspire everybody to get active with her new Web site, trackandfitness.com.

"What I wanted to do was to encourage people to get up and move and what is really special about trackandfitness is you can travel the United States by entering every little thing that you do during the day," said Washington. "All of the steps you take, if you wear a pedometer, maybe it is simply that you're on a machine and it gives you the number of calories that you've burnt, you can input that information. And you determine where you want to start and where you want to end and you will see, on a daily basis, footstep that will be moving in that direction."

Your cross-country trip will be a virtual one, of course, but along the way you can answer trivia questions about cities and towns you pass through and send e-postcards to friends and family.

Competitive types might want to form teams and race the across the country while others will take a more leisurely pace.

"You can do it as an individual, you can do it as a team, you can do it as a family," said Washington. "We think that schools are going to be interested in trying to implement this, because our kids aren't getting a lot of exercise. My grandson, I mean, he stays in front of that computer, the video games. And so, we really want to find ways to get kids excited about exercising again."
