KTKA has been preparing for digital for years

Here at KTKA 49 ABC, our technicians have been preparing for the switch for years.
What you're seeing here is some of what's been done so far, and this is where more of the upgrades will go.
The digital age is already here at KTKA and has been for a couple years.
"We've had HD on Cox Cable for over two years now. We launched HD over the air in July of '07," said KTKA engineer James Breitenbach. "This technology will provide multiple channels from one provider. We can provide more than one channel. We can provide maybe up to four channels simultaneously in the same space that once occupied just one channel."
And as part of our upgrades to make the digital switch are new weather notification capabilities, a first for Topeka.
"It allows us to not interrupt HD programming during prime time to give weather information, where in the past, the crawl information had to be taken back into standard definition mode," 49 Chief Meteorologist Matt Miller said. "It's going to pinpoint more where the threat is and it's going to highlight those areas."
Here's where you can find our digital broadcasts:
If you receive our over-the-air signal with a digital tuner, tune to channel 48.
You can also see our second channel, featuring weather and ag information on 49.2.
Cox cable customers can watch us in digital by tuning in channel 601.
Our weather and ag channel will on Cox soon.
We're also in digital on the Wamego cable system and coming soon to Emporia.
