Turning one gift into two
9:01 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2008
It's been more than two years since Brad Padilla became paralyzed.
"I was just wrestling with a friend," he said. "You know, a freak accident."
The accident blind-sided his family, but they outfitted their minivan the best they could.
"I could really barely fit," Padilla said, "but I did do what I had to do really."
Thanks to the kind hearts of people in the community, Padilla, and paraplegic Ray Santin, both have some new wheels.
"Feel really, really appreciative of everything," Santin said.
Thursday, Santin received a new handicap accessible van thanks to efforts through Community Keeps Giving. In return, Santin donated his old van to Padilla.
"I'm just hoping the van holds up for him," Santin said. "Somebody was doing good for us, we felt it was the right thing to do."
Now, instead of folding up ramps, Padilla's brother can simply push a button to get him in the car.
"I really appreciate everybody's help," Padilla said. "I really haven't had much help in the past."
Santin said, "It's really nice to give what I can give. I mean, it ain't much, but, it's better than nothing, I guess."
That giving spirit is taking both men to a whole new level.
