Short game makes the difference at Topeka Golf Association Championship

Two men have been near the top of the leader board all summer long in Topeka Golf Association play, Mark Elliott and Chris McGown.

Elliott won the stroke play a few weeks ago, and McGown was looking to get some revenge in the Match Play Final.

The former Washburn golfer faced off against the former Ichabod quarterback at Shawnee Country Club this weekend.

Elliott sinks from the fringe on the 14th hole, to go up one for the championship. Later, Elliott had to make one to tie, and he pushed it just right of the cup.

He made up for it later. Elliot made a long birdie to win the TGA Match Play Championship 3-1.

"My short game was pretty good all week long. When I missed greens, I tended to hit some pretty good chips, and I did it again today," Elliott said. "It worked out my short game was really good, and I hit the ball in the fairway most of the time. So, I gave myself some opportunities."

"Mark is playing really well, had a really good summer last year. I didn't play with him, but as you guys say today his short game was really solid he never missed a putt that he should have made and he chipped really well too," McGown said.

It's not only the second consecutive year that Elliott won the Stroke Play, it's the second consecutive year in a row that he has won the Match Play as well.

The Topeka Golf Association will hold their next event on August 9 and 10 when the area's best amateur golfers square in the two-man Best Ball Tournament.
