Fort Riley Three members of a military band were injured in a mishap with a parachutist during opening ceremonies this morning at the 1st Infantry Division review at Fort Riley.
The parachutist landed in the tuba and trombone section. Three band members were taken to Irwin Army emergency room. All injuries are minor, a Fort Riley public information officer Deb Skidmore said. One person was knocked unconscious and another had neck pain, according to The Associated Press. A third band member originally thought to have sprained an ankle actually suffered a broken leg.
The parachutist, who is associated parachute club from K-State, declined treatment at the scene, but did report a bloody noise and pain in the leg, Skidmore said.
Another parachutist landed successfully.
Two tubas were destroyed.
After the incident, the 1st Infantry Division's band regrouped and the opening performance resumed.
The event is the dedication of Victory Park, honoring veterans and soldiers who have fought and died in wars dating to World War I.
