Whitney Vasquez came to Women in the Outdoors with her mom and sister. "I just think it's cool they're just doing it for women," said Vasquez.
Their first stop was archery, where they even let me try.
"The archery is the first thing we did this morning. And, I'm going to self defense and then shot gun later, and then mechanics," said Vasquez.
Whitney's dad is in the national guard and suggested the three women come.
"It's good for anybody to have these kind of skills, outdoor skills, anybody can be in any situation especially self defense and learning how to shoot a gun," said Vasquez.
Women were learning a broad array of skills like outdoor photography and cleaning weapons.
The highest ranking woman in the Kansas National Guard, Brigadier General, Deborah Rose is the guest speaker.
"I think what is empowering is to be able to have a skill that you can't do, and be able learn how to do it, and you're in a safe situation here with other women," said Rose.
She's here to encourage other women to step out and learn new skills.
Brenda Jones drove in all the way from Arkansas to come to this event.
"I got online and pulled up events, and I liked the activities that they were offering, so I signed up," said Jones.
She's been to a few of these events and says it's great for women. "I really think it helps empower themselves and take care of themselves so that they can be better at taking care of other people," said Jones.
