K-State Ag Today: Presence of soybean aphids in KSU fields raises red flag
Story by Jeff Wichman
11:42 a.m. Friday, July 25, 2008
K-State Research and Extension entomologist Jeff Whitworth is encouraging producers to scout for soybean aphids after they were discovered in some of the university’s soybean research plots in Riley County.
He says soybean aphids damage the plant by sucking juice from the veins. This can stunt plant growth, reduce pod set, and/or result in smaller seeds.
When planning a strategy to manage soybean aphids, Whitworth says producers should take natural enemy populations and the weather into consideration. High temperatures help to slow soybean aphid reproduction, which helps predators, such as lady beetles, green lacewings and parasites, keep populations in check.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service, NRCS, reports an additional $1.45 million for financial assistance has been made available to Kansas producers who had conservation practices damaged or destroyed by flooding events in Kansas during 2008 that need to be repaired and replaced.
But, producers need to act quickly and sign up for financial assistance by the August 1 deadline.
The funds provide an opportunity for producers to repair or replace the damaged practices and keep their conservation practices working.
More information is available at local NRCS offices or by logging on to Kansas NRCS.
