K-State expands degree options for students studying biofuels

This fall, Kansas State University students enrolled in the feed science degree program will now have two options: Feed production or biofuels production.
Fred Fairchild, a professor in the Department of Grain Science and Industry at Kansas State University, says students already pursuing a feed production degree aren’t necessarily frozen out.
“Well it impacts both the students that want to look for something to do in their future in ethanol, and the biofuels industry is attracting a lot of them. But it also keyed a lot of interest from students that are already here," Fairchild said. "In fact, we have some students who are already here that are going to switch into this option now that it’s available and finish up their work in the biofuels area.”
Fairchild’s advice to both current and future K-State students: Load up on science and math.
“The option is similar to the backgrounds they need for all of our degree options here in grain science. Most generally, you have to have an interest in production, you have to have a pretty strong emphasis in science, mathematics and things related in those fields because most of these are production-type positions that you have to understand processes and the chemistry and the physics of how they work," he said.
Fundraising is underway for a new biofuels refinery and feed mill to be added to the grain science complex. You can find more information on our web site, at KStateAgToday.org.
