Manhattan It was a party that certainly made a big splash in the Little Apple – getting people’s feet wet in more ways than one.
Hundreds of residents have gathered here in celebration of Manhattan Day. That’s the official celebration of the 151st anniversary of the Little Apple.
“It’s just fun,” says Andie Waldron, who plays with other neighborhood kids regularly. “We’re having a good time playing in the water and getting wet.”

Though kids are splishing around the water, adults of the Westbaker neighborhood also say the Manhattan Day block party is a splash.
“We just can’t imagine raising our family anywhere else,” says DeAnn Waldron, who has lived in the Westbaker neighborhood for 10 years. She grew up in Junction City, but has lived in the Little Apple off-and-on since attending K-State. “It’s a great community.”
“It’s nice to meet some of the new neighbors you haven’t had a chance to meet,” says Barbara Walter, who helped organize the block party with Waldron and neighbor Pat Hudgins. “It’s a really good neighborhood. You can always count on your neighbors if something goes wrong, you know there’s someone there to help you.”
Even some former residents of this neighborhood traveled two hours from Kansas City just to take part in the fun.
Two hours away or two houses down the block, this celebration in the Little Apple is a big one many didn’t want to miss.
