Council members told city staff to write a new contract to give a local group another chance to buy Sumner School at its meeting Tuesday night.
Community First entered into a contract with the city to buy the building last October.
Last month, city staffers denied the group's request for an extension to the contract.
The group then took its fight before the City Council.
The contract extension is not official, but Council members are expected to approve the measure at their next meeting.
Community First is trying to raise more than $3 million to buy the building and turn it into a community center.
