Rough economy not slowing Topekans for 4th of July

It wouldn't be the 4th of July without a colorful fireworks display, or buying some and shooting them off yourself.
And it doesn't matter how high gas prices get, some Topekans we caught up with at the pool say they're not letting the bad economy stop their Independence Day fun.
“Tradition and that's my favorite holiday,” said Tammy Baldwin. “So we usually have a big bang, so we plan on the same this year.”
“To me, the gas prices do affect me, but for that, I think I’ll have a little extra money to still go out and party,” said Glen Heaven.”
Party, but at what expense?

Fireworks vendors are gearing up for sales, unloading truckloads of fireworks. But you may not get much bang for your buck this year.
Vendors say fireworks will cost 30 percent more, but some say it doesn't matter.
“Couple hundred, sometimes three or four,” said Baldwin. “This year it'll probably be more so we'll have fun.”
“We try to limit it to $50 but we usually go over,” said Jennifer Smiley.
Stand locations
Not sure where to buy fireworks this year? We've created an interactive map of all the fireworks stand locations in Topeka.
Smiley says the money she would spend on gas to go out of town will help with this year's budget.
She says she's made enough lifestyle changes, that changing plans for July 4th wouldn't feel like the right way to celebrate.
“Halfway through the summer and just a fun holiday to be with family,” she said.
Fireworks go on sale Friday, June 27 at 8 a.m.
