At least six apartment complexes in Topeka have fallen victim to thieves, police said.
Rent payments made by tenants were stolen from the night deposit boxes at the apartment office buildings over the last several days, but most of the stolen checks have been recovered, police said.
No arrests have been made.
Police ask that anyone who thinks they may have been a victim to contact their bank immediately and then contact the police department.
One thing people who use drop boxes can do to prevent themselves from becoming victims is to keep an eye out for suspicious activity and report people who should not be in the area of the drop boxes to police. Another thing people who write checks can do is to use a check-wash proof pen, such as the Uniball 207 gel pen.
Anyone with information on these thefts is asked to call detectives at 368-9400.
