Play it Smart students give back
5:10 p.m. Monday, March 10, 2008
These students spent their day off getting dirty and spreading mulch.
They are part of the Play it Smart group, where student athletes focus on academics and work in the community.
"It just teaches you how hard it is to actually do manual labor, so maybe you will have more respect for the people who do that," said Oliva.
Trucks full of mulch kept coming as the students emptied the loads.
Students are replacing the mulch around the park.

Play it Smart sponsor Lesia Carter says her students work hard.
"The supervisor shared with me that they have emptied 9 truck loads of mulch," said Carter.
Adrianna Cortez says the work isn't bad.
"It doesn't bother me too much, it's a lot of work on my arms," Cortez.
Sophomore John Carlson says he enjoys the work.
"It feels good just helping give back," said Carlson.
Carter says the students will take something from the day.
"To be able to look around a park and say I helped do that, that's a good feeling," said Carter.
After seeing them work, I asked the Topeka High students if I could borrow this purple pitch fork and help spread a little mulch. But it's too heavy so I let these guys take over."
After 3 hours of work, students took a break in the general store for a Green River drink.
