Slattery to challenge Roberts for U.S. Senate seat

State Democratic officials say former Congressman Jim Slattery of Topeka has reconsidered his political future and will challenge Senator Pat Roberts this fall.

Kansas Democratic Party Chairman Mike Gaughan said today that Slattery will make a public statement next week that he's entering the race. Gaughan said Slattery has been talking with Kansans who say Roberts has been inattentive to the state's needs in Washington.

Lee Jones, who ran unsuccessfully in 2004 against Senator Sam Brownback, is the only Democrat who has filed for the office so far.

Slattery represented the 2nd District of eastern Kansas from 1983 through 1994 and ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1994. He had been mentioned as a potential candidate but said in November he wouldn't challenge Roberts.
