Health advisory issued
3:26 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2008
The City of Topeka Water Pollution Control Division has issued a health advisory along the Wanamaker Tributary beginning south of the Wanamaker Pump Station, located northwest of 10th Street and Wanamaker Road and south of I-70, following the rupture of an 18-inch force main.
The breach was discovered this morning. Contractors are on site and will begin excavation to locate the line and make the repair.
At this time, most of the raw sewage is being pumped through the line. The pump station will be taken offline this afternoon after the hole is excavated and before repairs begin. Topeka Water Pollution Control crews will pump as much sewage as possible from the station’s reservoir and transport it to a waste treatment plant.
The public and their pets should not come into contact with the water in the channel between the pump station and the Kansas River.
The advisory will remain in effect until further notice. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has been notified.

Not nearly as bad as the sewage from feed lots that pours into the rivers.
