Speculation surrounds police shooting

How did four off-duty officers end up at this house at 3 in the morning? What prompted the shooting that's left two men clinging to life?

They're questions that have left you, me and law enforcement baffled.

Only those involved know what really happened at this home Tuesday morning. Everyone wants answers and some think they already know.

"Some people who they did not know to be police came up and instigated a fight with them and they were ... just protecting their house, as far as they knew."

Police Chief Ron Miller says speculation is running rampant throughout Topeka.

"Stories get repeated, stories get embellished, changes occur," Miller said. "To those people, I would say let us investigate this matter."

The Chief says even he doesn't know all the facts surrounding the shooting. What he does know is if officers violated policy, he'll take care of it.

"I expect them to have exemplary behavior," Miller said. "The problem is, they're human and they make mistakes like anybody else."

Miller's trying to get to the bottom of whether the officers acted inappropriately.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the Law Enforcement Center, the Sheriff's working to determine if the officers committed a crime.

But, with so many unanswered questions about what really happened Tuesday morning, the police chief says patience is paramount.

Chief Miller says he expects it to take weeks before the investigation is complete.
