This summer will be the season of the superheroes with Batman and The Hulk primed to take a huge bite out of box-office. There’s another superhero that’s now come into play, and it’s Iron Man. While not having the heritage of the before mentioned heroes, Iron Man still has a huge fan base who’ve had the opening date of this movie marked on their calendar’s for sometime.
Robert Downey Jr. plays Tony Stark, a billionaire playboy, who’s company builds elements of destruction and sells them to what ever war-monger country has the highest bid. On a product demonstration trip to Afghanistan, Stark’s military convoy is ambushed and he’s taken hostage. The terrorists who kidnap him want a rocket to be built by Stark for their own use. Instead Stark turns the tables and builds a body armor suit to help him escape, and it’s there that Iron Man is born.
Stark returns to the United States a changed man who’s seen what destruction the products he’s created can and has done in the world. He stops the further production of weapons at his factory in favor of other projects that would be more beneficial to the world. To ensure that will happen, Iron Man is brought on the scene to battle the forces of evil and destruction.
“Iron Man” is terrific movie that’s definitely getting the summer movie season off on the right foot. Fueled by a solid story, cool effects and a great cast, I can see “Iron Man” having legs at the box office and playing throughout the summer months.
Director Jon Favreau did a superb job bringing this hero to the big screen, and he included some humanistic qualities to the character. I liked that aspect and thought it added a lot to the finished product. Favreau’s past directing credits included “Swinger’s” and “Elf,” but with “Iron Man” he makes the effort to not only satisfy the comic book fans, but also the moviegoers who aren’t as knowledgeable about Iron Man.
The cast is great with Downey Jr. proving he was the perfect choice to play Tony Stark/Iron Man. It was also nice to see Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and she does a credible job with the thankless, loyal assistant role. Terrence Howard is also good as Stark’s best friend, and the always-reliable Jeff Bridges rounds out this well-casted movie.
I had a great time watching “Iron Man,” and this movie will be one of the big box office hits of the summer. I plan on going back several more times throughout the summer to catch one of the best comic book movies that’s been made yet.
