On the last day of both Washburn's and Emporia State's baseball season, what better way to end it then facing your arch rival?
Washburn took game one of a double-header Sunday at home. Today, they traveled south on the Turnpike to tussle with the sixth-ranked Hornets.
In the top of the seventh, Washburn was already up two. Luis Beltran Lopez hit a single to left and Joe Hossey came around from second to score, bringing Washburn up 4-1.
In the bottom of the ninth, Emporia was down one with two outs. Brian Majors taps one to left field. Caleb Williamson would come into score from third, tying up the game and taking it into an extra inning.
In the bottom of the tenth inning, Williamson hit one deep into the gap in left singles in the winning run from third.
Emporia State takes three of four in the Turnpike Tussle series. They won this game 6-5 in ten innings. Coach Fornelli and the Hornets will open up MIAA tournament play on Friday.
"Going into there, today, we've been 3-4 our last seven games, so you know, we needed to come out and play well," said ESU Head Coach Bob Fornelli. "I don't know if we did come out and play well, but we found a way to get a win. We battled and battled and finally found a way to score some runs the last three innings."
