Ichabod golfers win Central Regional

Advance to 5th national tourney in last 6 years

— The No. 14 ranked Washburn Ichabod golf team reached their second straight and their fifth in the last six seasons with a 13-stroke victory at the NCAA Division II Men's Central Regional Tournament at Red Hawk Run Golf Course in Findlay, Ohio. Washburn will now travel to Houston, Texas for the 46th Annual Men's Division II Championships which will be played May 14-17 at Memorial Park Golf Course as part of the NCAA Division II Spring Sports Festival.

The Ichabod team score of 884 was not only the best in the Central Region, but it also topped the schools from the Great Lakes Region who were playing on the same course. The winner of the Great Lakes Region was Indianapolis with a team score of 885. Washburn completed their third round with a 11-over 299 finishing 13 shots better than Central Missouri who finished with a three-round total of 897. Joining Washburn and Indianapolis at the national tournament will be Grand Valley State, who had the next lowest team score out of both regionals. Missouri Western's Aaron Lisenbee won the Central Regional after shooting an even par 216 for the three rounds.

John Robbins led the Ichabods with a 1-over 72 in the third round which placed him fourth overall. He was 4-over for the tournament with rounds of 77, 71 and 72 for a 220 total. Robbins began the third round in a tie for seventh place but moved up to fourth with his par round. Robbins was even on the front nine with two bogies followed by three birdies with another bogey before the turn. Robbins rebounded from a triple bogey on the 11th hole to finish with three birdies in the final six holes wrapping up his round.

Matt Ewald finished in a tie for sixth overall with his third round 77. He was 7-over for the tournament (74-72-77=223). Ewald started his third round with back to back bogies before finishing the front side at even par after an eagle on the seventh hole. To begin his back nine, Ewald had a bogey on 10 and had double bogies on 14 and 18 to finish five over for the round.

Matt Salome finished his final round with a 4-over 76. Salome was one of two Ichabods to eagle the par 5 No. 7 hole and finished his front-nine with a 1-over 37. On the backside, Salome was 3-over finishing 7-over for the regional with rounds of 76, 71, 76 for a 223 placing him in a tie for sixth overall.

Ryan Deutsch recorded an 8-over 224 (73-77-74) for the the regional with a final round of 2-over 74. Overall Deutsch finished in eighth place. In the third round, he was even at the turn recording three birdies and finished with back to back bogies on the 14th and 15th holes coming home with a 2-over 74.

Matt Lazzo completed his third round with an 8-over 80 finishing the tournament with a combined score of 228 (75-73-80) placing him in a tie for 13th overall with at 12-over. Lazzo was 3-over on the front side and finished 5-over on the back nine leading to his 80.
