It may have taken the grounds crew hitting the field at 6:30 Thursday morning, but Emporia State was determined to get the North Central Regional Softball Tournament underway, especially with the Hornets opening play against rival Washburn.
And thanks to a four-run second, ESU won its fourth game against the Lady Blues, 5-to-3.
Shelbe Hughes was two for two with two runs scored and an RBI for the Hornets, while Mandy Tarbutton led the offensive attack for Washburn with two hits, a run scored and an RBI.
Samantha Sheeley picked up her 25th win of the year, scattering eight hits over seven innings with four strikeouts.
In other tournament action, Winona State got the day started off with a 2-to-1 win over Central Missouri.
The Warriors will face twelfth-ranked Southwest Minnesota State, who were 3-2 winners over Northwest Missouri.
And in game three, it was a battle of the Mavericks. Nebraska-Omaha used the only hit in the game to earn a 1-0 win over Minnesota State-Mankato.
The Mavs await a Friday 3:00 game with Emporia State, while Washburn faces Mankato in a 10:00 a.m. elimination game.
