In 2007, the Seaman Vikings' quest for a state title was cut short with a 5-2 loss to Saint Thomas Aquinas in the championship game. Today, the Vikes begin their bid for an '08 crown in the regional baseball tournament. Top-seeded Seaman played host to eighth-seed Highland Park, along with the other regional game between KC Turner and KC Schlagle. Bottom of the first, Nelson Jones on the mound for the Scots, one out, bases loaded and Marcus Peavler drops one in shallow center. Adam Davey and Zach Carlson both score. And the Vikings advance to the regional finals by run-ruling, Highland Park 15-0 in two innings.
The Vikings, regrouping, quick-turnaround from the regional semi-final to the championship, taking on Turner, who was a 15-0 winner over Schlagle. Bottom of the fourth, Seaman up 2-0, bases loaded, no outs with Brandon Simmons on the mound for Turner. He walks TJ Lorson, Ashton Stephens scores and that would be the only damage from the inning though for the Golden Bears. Bottom of the fifth, Adam Davey rips one into the corner in left field and he's able to turn that hit into a double. The next batter is Zach Carlson, hitting up the gap. Davey is on his horse, a one-run single for Carlson. Seaman advances on to the state tournament, beating Turner 6-1.
Hayden Coach Aaron Becker is trying to lead his team to a regional championship. In the bottom of the sixth, Conner McCrite chops one back to the pitcher he would get thrown out at first, but Jess Wood comes in from third to score, 8-0 Hayden. The very next batter, with a man at second, TJ McGreevy at the plate...this kid is not only a great quarterback and a pretty good point guard, he can also swing the lumber with a two run shot to right center. Hayden goes on to the championship game by run-ruling Jeff West in six innings, 10-0 the final.
And the team Hayden will face will either be Holton or Tonganoxie. Pick it up in the bottom of the first, Tyler Miller is going send one into the gap in left center, scoring Dalton Harshaw from second and Dylan Bowser from first. The Wildcats go on top early, 2-0. But here comes Tongy. Rob Shlicht booms one over the center fielder's head to drive in Blaize Oelshlaeger from first. Then Shlicht would get caught in a pickle and get thrown out at third to end the inning. Tonganoxie would go on to win over Holton, 10-3.
To the championship game now, with the one-seed Hayden taking on third-seeded Tonganoxie. In the bottom of the second inning, Jess Wood at the dish will sky one over the center fielder's head, which will drive in Brad Girard from first and Wood would get cut down trying to take third on the play. The Wildcats are on top, 1-0. In the top of the third, Tonganoxie would respond. Brandon Yoder goes opposite fielder and tattoos the score board in right for a solo tater. All tied at one. In the bottom of the third, Jake Sittenauer inside-outs the pitch to deep right and that's deep enough to let Conner McCrite to tag up at third. And Hayden would keep piling on the runs to take the championship, 6-2.
