Travel Advisory: MacVicar Avenue to close this weekend

Weather permitting, crews will close MacVicar Avenue from I-70 to 6th Street beginning May 16 through May 19 as they continue sewer installation work.

Both the northbound and southbound lanes of MacVicar Avenue will be closed beginning 8:30 a.m. May 16, and will reopen to all traffic at 4 p.m. May 19.

Advance message boards will alert drivers to the road closure. No marked detours will be provided. Drivers should expect major delays and are advised to use alternate routes.

The MacVicar Avenue project, a cooperative project between the Kansas Department of Transportation and the City of Topeka, includes the widening of MacVicar Avenue and the addition of a second lane to the eastbound I-70 to MacVicar Avenue exit ramp.

Project construction will be completed in two phases. Phase I, which began April 7, includes new roadway construction for the two southbound lanes and half of the center turn lane on MacVicar Avenue. The addition of a second lane to the eastbound I-70 to MacVicar Avenue exit ramp will also occur during this phase. Phase II includes the new roadway construction of the two northbound lanes and the remaining half of the center turn lane on MacVicar Avenue.

Dinkel Construction Company of Topeka is the primary contractor for this project with a total contract cost of $4,176,000. The scheduled completion date for the entire project is summer 2009.

The Kansas Department of Transportation urges all motorists to be alert, obey the warning signs, and “Give ‘Em a Brake!” when approaching and driving through work zones.
