Dover woman brings pies to perfection
Locals know all about Norma Grubb's homemade baked pies, and its even gathered national attention.
Locals know all about Norma Grubb's homemade baked pies, and its even gathered national attention. Good Morning America arrived in Dover for it.
But it was getting right down to business for me, I wanted to know 88-year-old Norma's coconut cream pie secret.
"It takes, flour and shortening for the crust...egg, milk, sugar, cornstarch...did I say eggs?" Norma said.
That's right folks, no tricks, Norma's secret is baking from scratch. But good friend Judy Thomas says you can attribute some of that recipe to good ole fashion Midwestern spirit.
Story background
Catch Norma's interview on Good Morning America here.
"It's homemade. It's made in the best town in America, in the best cafe in America. It's Dover, Kansas," said Judy.
Norma says part of that old Midwestern spirit is wholesome family tradition. But she is humble about where she learned the tricks of the trade.
"Well...my mother and sister I guess," said Norma.
And it's paid off in a pie to perfection. It's no wonder it grabbed Good Morning America's attention. I just happened to catch Janet Sage Bruce, who nominated Norma. I asked her what about Norma's pies made her contact Good Morning America.
"They're just really good, and that crust is just flaky, and that creamy filling; and that coconut cream, I know that is what she is famous for," said Janet.
Because of Janet, Norma is now one of four finalists competing for Good Morning America Weekend's Best Slice Challenge.
And Sommerset Cafe owner Connie Miller says it's Norma's pies that catches everyone's eye, and a little something else.
"It's Norma's touch, it's Norma's touch," said Connie.
Despite the challenge's results, Connie jokingly says one thing is certain.
"But you know the price of pie will probably have to go up now," said Connie.
More certain is that Norma will be even more busy making coconut cream pie. This won't be any problem for Norma.
"I have probably made more of these in my lifetime than any," said Norma.
