Folks gather to buy property cheap

Auctioneers worked the crowd at the county tax foreclosure sale.
The county sells homes and land if the property taxes haven't been paid for three years.
They sell commercial property if back taxes are owed after two years.
"If you like your streets paved, if you like the police coming to your house when you need them, the fire department needs to be funded. The civic duty is to pay taxes. And, when that's not done, then we can't fund those very important governmental services," Shawnee County Counselor Rich Eckert said.
Interest in those properties is growing.
The number of potential buyers has doubled in the last few years.
Today, they didn't have enough chairs for all of the people who showed up.

To respond to Rich Eckert, people who rent and people who come to Topeka and earn a living also in enjoy our paved roads and the security of the police and fire department. Property owners just get the luxury of covering the costs of the majority it, while the rest dont.
