A tool for your survival against Kansas disasters

Because Kansas is so susceptible to winter disasters, like the December, 2007 Manhattan ice storm, Kansas emergency management officials need to be top notch. That is why Kansas leads the nation in emergency preparedness. Their newest tool is like a mobile disaster headquarters, fit with everything needed for recovery efforts, even tracking devices.
But being prepared at the state and local level is not enough, according to Kansas Emergency Director Angee Morgan.
"The more you can do to keep yourself prepared, especially in the rural areas, where you are a distance from an ambulance or a hospital, the safer you will be," said Morgan.
Angee says all of us being prepared makes it easier for emergency officials to deploy help, like the new disaster trailer, where it is actually needed.
"If we know you are well taken care and prepared, then again, we are able to prioritize our short resources in some cases; or, the inability to move resources if the roads are impassible, to those real critical areas," said Morgan.
Wednesday, November 19, 2008 is Winter Weather Awareness Day in Kansas; what a perfect day to learn what you need to do before a storm hits.
"Go to the store, get our milk, food, water, diapers, ice, whatever that might be; an extra blanket on the bed, fuel in our tank and cash in our pockets," said Morgan.
Don't forget to keep watching the 49 Storm Team.
"Meteorologists are really getting good at pinpointing three days out, five days out; there is a storm system coming. We need to take that seriously," said Morgan.
And, when we tell you a storm is coming, get extra medication. That will keep you out of trouble if roads become impassible.
