Fire promotions issue postponed again
It's the latest chapter in the never ending fight between Topeka firefighters and administration.
For the second time this year, Topeka City Council members postponed a decision on the proposal to get rid of the fire promotions board.
It's the latest chapter in the never ending fight between firefighters and administration.
If the council eliminated the promotions board, Chief Howard Giles would have the same power as other department heads.
In May, the city council delayed the issue for six months.
Since then, there's been an alleged sickout by firefighters and Giles has gained a Fire Chief of the Year award from the Kansas State Association of Fire Chiefs.
Meanwhile, Topekans have grown tired of the fued.
"God forbid my house burns down and they spend half the time arguing on the front lawn while my house burns down," said Topekan Jonnell Johnson.
Recently, a YouTube video featuring a cardboard cut-out of controversial chief Giles.
For many Topekans, the joke fell flat and they're tired of the fight.
"Bring the two sides together, meet in the middle and work it out," said Virginia Mendoza.
For more than a year, firefighters and administration have bumped heads and some Topekans think the fight should continue.
"I agree with the firefighters on that," said Topekan Dale Hosman. "I think the fire chief hasn't been as understanding as he could be."
But forget about peace on Earth, many Topekans would just be happy with peace in the fire house.
"I think they each have their own side of the story to take and it's just sad that that's happening," Mendoza said. "I wish they could meet in the middle and work things out."
Next week, council members plan to discuss the promotions change with the legal department.
The topic will be brought up again in the December 16th City Council Meeting
