Clearing the shelves of a potential threat

Candy that could contain a trace amount of a chemical that made children sick in China was found on shelves of a Topeka store.

Candy that could contain a trace amount of a chemical that made children sick in China was found on shelves of a Topeka store.

49 News went to the store today and found out how the candy managed to get skipped over by a state inspection on Monday, and why Thursday the store took action.

Concepcion Reyes, the owner of Mabuhay Asian and Oriental Food Mart, says, "I will take it off. I don't want to endanger my customers."

Dozens of bags of White Rabbit candy are coming off the shelves at the Mabahay Asian and Oriental Food Mart. The candy has been recalled by Queensway Foods, but the Topeka business only found out Thursday after we started asking questions.

"Yes I am very surprised. I grew up eating that candy in the Philippines," Reyes said.

Owners at the store say a state inspector was in on Monday, looking for milk products that could contain melamine, a chemical in tainted Chinese milk.

"I showed them my milk products and he said all my products were okay," Reyes said.

But the inspector didn't look at the candy, which does contain a small amount of milk.

The Department of Agriculture said the recall process doesn't put them in the loop right away.

Lisa Taylor, director of communications with the Kansas Department of Agriculture says, "Since KTKA has let us know about this, we will certainly be doing some investigating to find out the extent of it's availability in the marketplace across Kansas."

And the bags found at Mabuhay are from the same lot number Queensway Foods listed in their recall in a letter sent out on Tuesday.

Queensway Foods is pulling all flavors of White Rabbit candy to make sure they get any of the products that might contain trace amounts of melamine.
