This is the second year for the Kansas Senior Spelling Bee.
The 59 participants first took a written test, then the top 20 battled for the title of Spelling Bee Champion.
The contestants had to be at least 50 to enter.
The oldest contestant was 87.
"Well, the spelling bee’s kind of exciting," Duane Anstine, part of the planning committee, said. "It’s an opportunity for some of our people in Hutchinson and the rest of the state to participate and put their mental skill to work."
Nancy Reese from Salina was the winner.
She will get an all-expense paid trip to Wyoming to represent Kansas in the National Spelling Bee.
