Feed the families in Manhattan. That’s the goal of the Cats for Cans Food Drive.

"Cats for Cans is a huge event," Flint Hills Breadbasket Executive Director Natascha Phillip said. "We pair up with the K-State student athletes and KSU football team, and they come together to host a big food collection for the Flint Hills Breadbasket to help stock our shelves for the upcoming winter months."

Student athletes hit the parking lot two hours before the 2:30 kickoff for the K-State game hoping to get as many donations as possible.

"We’re taking cash donations too, and they’re being doubled. So, if you guys want to make a contribution we’re gonna be feeding the families in Manhattan," one member from the equestrian team said.

Thrivent for Lutherans will match the cash donations received today.

"It’s really important," Phillip said. "There’s just such an increase in need during the holiday season, and so, it takes a lot of food to be able to feed the families that are coming in and can’t afford to provide any for their family. So, with this big event we’re able to stock our shelves, and we’re able to help everybody who comes into the breadbasket."

The Cats for Cans food drive typically brings in about 15,000 pounds of food and almost $10,000 each year.
