Tainted candy recall update
11:35 p.m. Monday, October 6, 2008
Monday, the FDA is alerted people of another tainted Chinese product, Blue Cat flavor drinks.
The FDA advises the public not to consume this product and recommends that retailers and food service operators remove the product from sale or service.
The drinks contain tainted Chinese milk containing melamine.
The state is making sure tainted candy containing the same chemical gets pulled from the shelves.
We talked to the Communications Director at the Department of Agriculture, who says they are dealing with the problem.
We first brought you this story on KTKA.com when we found White Rabbit candy on store shelves in Topeka.
That candy has also been recalled.
Since our story aired, inspectors have pulled the candy from another Asian market in Kansas City, Kansas.
Inspectors continue to look for any products that may have melamine in them.
Melamine is used to make plastics and fertilizers.
Experts suspect suppliers in China were trying to boost output by diluting milk.
They added the melamine because the nitrogen content can fool tests for protein content.
Melamine can cause kidney stones and kidney failure. Infants are especially vulnerable.
So far, the contamination is blamed for killing four children and causing kidney problems in 54,000 others in China.
13,000 of those children required hospitalization.
