A friendly competition to help the needy ends Friday.
Emporia State and Washburn University are collecting food for Let's Help and the United Way. It's called "Can Emporia," and the collecting is done mainly by students.
There is a bin at Hy-Vee. It's the first time Washburn is asking the Capital City residents for help.
"I think it's one of the best philanthropies we can do for the Topeka community and it's a way that we get to connect with the community," Can Emporia coordinator Whitney Philippi said.
Last year, students collected 39,000 cans. This year's winner will be announced at Washburn University's homecoming this Saturday when Washburn will play Emporia.
