Neighborhood's pride not damaged by vandalism
Residents of Topeka's Historic Old Town aren't letting vandals prevent them from sprucing up their neighborhood.
"I'm removing the sod so that we can actually landscape the bus shelters," says Historic Old Town neighbor Hi Stockwell.
Pulling weeds is a labor of love for him. He is prepping the dirt so he and his neighbors will have an easier time when it comes to planting.
"The neighborhood has plants and trees available, and we're going to make it more interesting as well as more beautiful for the neighborhood," says Hi.
A couple of weeks ago, Hi noticed the shelter glass had been shattered.
While the damage to the shelter may not be obvious at first, what you can see is this slot where a protective buffer used to be, plus the evidence left behind.
"The protective glass was broken and not the etching itself," says Hi.
The image shows the outline of Grace Cathedral located in Historic Old town. It has remained untouched. Hi wants to see that protective glass replaced. The Transit Authority says it is working on making that happen. Hi says the sooner the better.
"As long as damage is left in the neighborhood, any kind of damage, whether it be broken glass or graffiti, it continues to multiply," says Hi.
And though he works alone today, Hi says the neighbors are working together to preserve the character of Historic Old Town.
Neighbors will plant flowers at both bus shelters tomorrow starting at eight a.m. We spoke to the Transit Authority, who says the replacement glass is on order. They hope to have it installed next week.
