Opposing political opinion expressed

A woman has a stolen campaign sign returned with an unwelcome addition.

When John McCain picked Sarah Palin as a running mate, Jan Peterson got excited.

"That's when I actually went and got the signs," Peterson said.

She put three campaign signs in her yard supporting the running mates, but last week all three disappeared.

"I just kind of put it out of my mind until this morning," Peterson said. "My husband called and said, 'I think you've got one of your signs back.'"

Her sign was back, but it now had an unwelcome addition.

Written over the original white lettering in black ink, the sign reads "Paris Hilton would be better than McCain" on one side. The opposite side has the words "Black Power" written over it with a cartoon fist.

Police say it's not uncommon for campaign signs to be stolen around this time of year, but say getting a stolen sign back is very strange.

Peterson says she now feels threatened.

"What are they gonna do now?" Peterson asked of the vandals. "Are they gonna deface something else? I'm afraid to leave my car in the driveway."

Freedom of speech and expression are rights guaranteed in the Constitution, but Peterson says this simple act of vandalism has taken that right from her.

"It's too bad that I can't have my sign out," Peterson said. "Everybody should be able to have whatever sign they want without somebody stealing them or defacing them."

Peterson has already gotten another McCain-Palin sign to replace the others she lost, but she isn't sure if she will put it up.

She says this is the first year she has ever put signs up in support of a presidential candidate.

I rarely put up political signs. In fact I've only done it twice. Once in '92 for Clinton and this year for Obama.

Back in '92 within a few days of having the sign someone under the cloak of darkness tore it up in to scores of pieces and threw it all over my yard. Now that I think about it they probably had to have taken the sign, gone somewhere to tear it up, and then brought it back. It would have taken too long to do that on site.

Anyway, it is unsettling but I bet the lady doesn't have anything to worry about. It was probably some neighborhood kid(s). Besides who really writes 'Black Power' on anything anymore? Sounds like someone trying to make it ~look~ as if a black person did this.

Peace.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. My Obama sign was stolen Saturday night or Sunday morning. Some folks apparently have nothing better to do than mess with other people's property.

Oddly of all the Obama signs in about 3 blocks of our house ours was the only one stolen as far as I can tell. As stated above it is unsettling. Getting our sign stolen just caused me to donate more to the Obama campaign and I will be early voting tomorrow so in a way what the thief attempted to do backfired.

I just hope no matter who wins this election ~everyone~ can keep a cool head. There is so much hate mongering happening lately That is truly what's ugly and disturbing.

Peace
