Extended warranties not as easy as you'd think

When you make a big purchase like a big screen TV, and buy the extended warranty, you think everything will be taken care of.

"You think everything's going to be taken care of. You are getting the extended warranty and assured that there is somebody local that can come out on the product that you're buying," Debbie Booth, who bought a television, said.

Debbie Booth bought a JVC big screen TV from Best Buy.

She spent almost $400 more for an extended warranty, and now she is left without a working TV.

"I've gone through them and like I say, they told me to call JVC, and I just keep getting the run around. I've called the store several times and talked to different managers and I just keep getting the run around," Booth said.

Booth was told it was probably the lamp that burned out, and it wasn't hard to fix.

"I did actually have somebody from Best Buy call me and tell me they did have a lamp in stock that they could mail out to me and I could install it myself," Booth said.

Booth says she wouldn't have bought the extended warranty on her big screen if she had to fix it herself.

So she told Best Buy she wanted someone to come out and help. They said it would be at least another two weeks.

"I don't just understand why it would take two weeks to get something scheduled, for a service like this, especially if it's just the lamp, as they like to say," Booth said.

So we went into Best Buy and spoke with one of the customer service managers.

When I told them about Booth's problem, they started making calls immediately.

I was told a repairman will look at Booth's TV this Friday. I'll let you know what happens.

After we did some digging, it appears the problem does not lie with the Topeka Best Buy store.

Any time you buy and extended warranty from Best Buy, you're making an agreement with a separate service center.

They're the ones responsible for fixing something under warranty.
