Topeka police say they have a 24-year-old man in custody as a suspect in the death of a Topeka woman whose body was found Sunday behind a Manhattan motel.
Deon A. Ross, 24, of Topeka, was arrested Tuesday on first-degree murder charges. He is being held in the Shawnee County Department of Corrections for Pottawatomie County.
Police say he was an acquaintance of 18-year-old Alheli Alcantara, who was last seen alive Saturday night in Topeka. The minivan she was driving was found early Tuesday morning in Topeka.
Alcantara graduated from Manhattan High School in December. An uncle says the teen had been living in Topeka for about two months so she could be closer to the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
Friends of the murdered teen have created a Facebook page. They are posting comments and updating developments on the case.
Police still need more information. If you know anything about the murder, call Crime Stoppers at (785) 234-0007.
The Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office, Riley County Police Department and Topeka Police Department participated in this investigation.
