Broadleaf weeds are starting to make an appearance. The root system is so big that when pulled, they can leave craters in lawns.

Dave Jackson is a regular guest on 49 News' Good Morning Kansas. He's also available at his business, Jackson's Greenhouse, 1933 NW Lower Silver Lake Road, in Topeka, or by calling (785) 232-3416.
“They are busy storing their reserves in their root system this time of year,” 49 Garden Expert Dave Jackson said. “And, this is the time then to catch them because their translocating their energy to that root system.”
Jackson suggests using good old fashion elbow grease and a weed digging tool to remove these unsightly weeds, but make sure you get the whole root out or the weed will come back.
However, for those who see the task of digging up each individual weed too daunting, Jackson suggests ferti-lome Weed Free Zone and Weed-Out Lawn Weed Killer. Those products are available at a number of area garden stores.
These products won’t hurt existing grass. However, you cannot use these ferti-lome products right before or after lawn seeding.
“You have to mow at least twice – your new grass – before you can use this product on your lawn,” Jackson said.
