Keeping seniors safe, warm and dry
The volunteers were from Rebuilding Together. Founding president Vern Failor says the purpose of the non-profit is to keep seniors warm, safe and dry through volunteer repairs.
"And they painted the walls in here, double coat," says Lynn Margien.
She proudly shows off the work that was done in her home by nearly fifty volunteers from 190th Air Refueling Wing.
"I was so excited the day that they came, I must have been a pain to everybody," she says.
Crews painted the walls in the living and dining rooms. In the kitchen, they put in a new floor and fixed leaks in her chimney and sink. They also put in a new rail in the basement.

The volunteers were from Rebuilding Together. Founding president Vern Failor says the purpose of the non-profit is to keep seniors warm, safe and dry through volunteer repairs.
Failor says the best part is, "To see the folks, how happy they are when the work gets done and how appreciative they are. We get letters and cards all the time."
But it also tough for Failor to know he can't help everyone.
"Sometimes we have to tell folks that we can't do their project because it's not in the scope of what we can get volunteers to do," he says.
Failor would like to get volunteers to paint the outside of Lynn's house. Although she would love the help...
"Definitely, I'd be willing to do it again, no problem," Lynn laughs.
But not at the expense of others. Lynn wants others to be given a chance at repairs before she receives any more help and is encouraging others who really need it to seek help.
"Quit being proud. There are a lot of us that own homes that cannot keep the repairs," says Lynn.
The application deadline is December 15. Volunteers will fix up the houses next spring.
