Topekans are putting their foot down to a proposed $10 a month raise to their electric bill.

Tonight, the Kansas Corporation Commission heard comments from Kansans upset about the increase, as it will in another meeting Thursday.

One of the biggest issues of debate was how much of an increase Westar energy needs versus how much of an increase they are asking for.

Westar Rate Increase Public Hearing

  • When: Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, 7 p.m.
  • Where: Century II Performing Arts and Convention Center, 225 W. Douglas Ave., Witchita, KS
  • Cost: Free
  • Age limit: All ages

Everyone seemed to agree that costs for Westar have gone up, but in their proposal Westar is also asking that shareholders receive a 10.9 profit on their investment.

That didn't go over very well with the standing-room-only crowd, which far exceeded the 49-person capacity of the room.

Citizens heard from Westar on why they need the increase, and then from the watchdog group Citizens Utility Ratepayer Board.

They explained what other factors are contributing to the increase besides the high cost of fuel.

Even though a multitude of people showed up to speak to the commission, some said they weren't sure their voice would be taken seriously.

There is still time to make your voice heard on the proposed rate increase on the KCC's Web site.

The may not raise the rated in Topeka but the rest of Kansas will suffer. Westar has been stealing from the general population for years. Plan and simple westar are nothing but greedy big business.
