Hot air balloons all a glow at Lake Shawnee
4:40 p.m. Friday, September 5, 2008
Beautiful, bright balloons were all a glow Friday at Lake Shawnee.
The balloons remained grounded, while the pilots created a "glow" effect by continuously firing the balloon's burners. As the sun set spectators on the ground were treated with a kaleidoscope of colors.
It's all apart of the annual Huff 'n Puff Hot-Air Balloon Rally. The event raises money for the Topeka Ronald McDonald House.
Events Schedule
Friday, Sept. 5
- 6:00 p.m. First flight launch
- 7:30 p.m. Glow & Tether Rides: an event where balloons inflate and remain in place as the sun sets. Pilots create a "glow" effect as darkness sets by continuously firing the balloon's burners. Tethered balloon rides will be available for a suggested $5 donation to Topeka's Ronald McDonald house.

The schedule of events depends heavily upon favorable weather conditions. Winds must be no greater than 8 mph for a safe launch and recovery. Any likelihood of rain showers, low clouds, or fog will also prevent hot air balloons from setting up.
