Furnace in shape? How to get ready for cold temps

Already brown dry leaves are on the ground. It's unseasonably cold in Topeka.
Cheryl Glover is outside walking with her grandson.
" I don't like it very well. You know we had such nice weather and all of a sudden it's just cold. It's awful "
Cheryl says her husband is making sure the filter is changed in the furnace. And that's something experts say any homeowner can, and should do every three to six months.
It'll either come out the bottom like shown on the video above or sometimes be mounted along the sides of the channel.
While it's relatively simple to change your furnace filter, all these wires and gadgets inside your furnace should be left to the experts. Having someone in to make sure things are running properly can make a big difference in the bottom line.
"A good thorough tune-up will really help you save money on the utility bills," a 49 News heating expert said.
An HVAC technician will check for cracks and leaks, clean and adjust burners, and check the safety controls. For those of you who might think it's unnecessary, Brandon Burgen, with McElroy's Plumbing and Heating, says think again.
"We get calls all winter long from people who put it off till the last minute. They don't realize anything's wrong and a lot of times the furnace for one reason or another can't be fixed and you're sitting in the middle of winter with no heat," he said.
