— Fort Riley and Kansas State University strengthened their bond today, with a visit to the post by the K-State men's basketball team.

The student athletes and the coaching staff met soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment, known as the Dagger Brigade, who will be deploying in October for Iraq.

The team also attended the Fort Riley Sept. 11 memorial ceremony, listening to "Taps," the 21-gun salute and remarks by Brig. Gen. Perry Wiggins. His speech was followed by the ringing of the bell to remember all the people who died at all three sites during Sept. 11. The team also spent time taking in the Global War on Terrorism monument and reading the names of Fort Riley soldiers listed on it.

155 Fort Riley soldiers have been killed in the war against terrorism to date.

K-State also ate with the soldiers, but were unable to do physical training or participate in a game of hoops with the troops because of NCAA pre-season rules.

K-State's basketball season begins Nov. 9 with an exhibition game against Washburn University.
