A day of caring helped many organizations today, all connected to the United Way.
One organization, Sheltered Living, received help from the Kansas Department of Corrections.
Despite the rain, they washed and detailed more than 30 cars for the center.
Volunteers also checked the oil and checked on safety features.
Employees of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway and Schendel Pest Control teamed up to spruce up the Antioch Family Life Center.
35 volunteers ripped out old carpet, cleaned windows and changed light bulbs.
Antioch helps empower Topekans to become self-sufficient by offering services like food and clothing banks, as well as adult education programs.
Today's volunteers say it's important to get out in the community, rather than just focusing on fundraising.
"To come out and see the agencies and talk to them about what they're involved in, I think United Way does good things, but to actually see firsthand the things you can do to make a difference. I think that's what's important," volunteer Ray Starr said.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe's fundraising campaign ends in two weeks.
