Those numbers are for 2007. Police say a lot of what contributed to that in Topeka was a problem with prostitution, but they've put a new system in place to bring crime down.
The FBI reports that crime is down nationwide 0.7 percent from 2006 to 2007, but in Kansas, it's up 7 percent.
Topeka Police have been following crime trends all along and say that comparing January of 2007 to August of 2007 with January to August of 2008, violent crime is down in the Capital City by 20.31 percent.
They say they've made that difference by taking a specific approach.
"We suppressed the gang activity, graffiti," Topeka Police Capt. jerry Stanley said. "We've focused on gang problems in East Topeka, identified them talking to them prosecuting them, charging them, those types of things."
Violent crime is composed of four offenses: murder, rape robbery and aggravated assault.
