State Election Director Brad Bryant says, "We need preparation because some will turn up at the wrong place. They will show up at the same time and create long lines."
Bryant is telling county officials across the state to gear up for big crowds.
He says, "Our message to the counties is get ready for turnout that may break records. Our previous record was set in 1992 in Kansas with over a million voters turning out. All indications are that we will break it or at least meet it."
That race had Bill Clinton taking on George Bush, Sr. Bush took the state of Kansas but lost the election to Clinton.
We asked other surrounding counties what their expectations are. Osage County says its already had several requests for mail-in ballots. Other big races there include the sheriff's, treasurer and county clerk's offices.
Jackson County also expects a good turnout. It also has a $21 million school bond issue on the ballot.
Bryant says things could get chaotic at polling places across the state.
"It's going to be hectic. There are going to be a lot of questions asked. They'll probably be some complaints. But we need to gear up and get ready and stay out of the news if we can."
Several county clerks and county election officers were at the Kansas County Officials Association conference this week. There are a little more than 100 counties in the state, where the chief election officials are also county clerks.
