Hornets get their groove back

Confidence grows as Emporia State goes 3-1

You know the old saying, "when the going gets tough, the tough get going." Well, the Emporia State University football team hasn't had a history of doing that.

Last year, the Hornets reeled off three straight victories to open the season. Then, they lost eight to close out the year.

And back in 2006, the Hornets began the year at 3-1, and then lost seven in a row to end the year.

With that said, Saturday's victory over Fort Hays State may be more significant than you think considering Emporia State hasn't won game after a lost in more than two years.

"Last year and the year before when we got our losses we were down and couldn't hop back up," ESU Senior Defensive Lineman Angelo Webb said. "I think it shows we are a different team mentally, and we are a lot better on the field."

"We've been talking about that a lot too, because I've been here the last two years and lost one and then we didn't win any more after that, so it felt good to -- so you never want to lose -- but it did feel good to bounce back from a loss and tp show that we got some guts and we are going to fight adversity and be there through the whole season," ESU Senior Wide Receiver Sean Partridge said.

So, is it really the Hornets intestinal fortitude or is it the attitude of the '08 team?

"I've always said that we're a different ball club then we were last year. This is a different mind set of this football team," ESU Head Coach Garin Higgins said. "I'm really proud of how our kids play, rebounding off that loss last week. I think we gained some confidence."

And the Hornets should have plenty of confidence sitting at 1-1 in conference and 3-1 overall.

The Hornets play again at 1 p.m. Sept. 27. They host Missouri Southern.
