Homers, Greinke lift Royals to win

Royals 5, Tigers 0

After 42 days in the cellar, the Royals have climbed into fourth place in the American League Central. Just barely, but they're there.

Zack Greinke pitched the Royals to a 5-0 victory over the Tigers on Tuesday night, shoving Detroit into fifth place. The Royals (72-86) have a .4557 winning percentage to the .4551 of the Tigers (71-85).

Greinke, 13-10, went seven shutout innings and lowered his ERA to 3.47. He gave up just four hits.

The Royals crashed three home runs against Freddy Garcia, making his second start for the Tigers since being rescued from post-surgery oblivion.

Mike Aviles pounded a solo shot to left in the first inning. Ryan Shealy led off the fourth with another drive to left. In the same inning, Alex Gordon sent a two-run shot to right field.

For Shealy, the homer was his seventh in his 16 games as a September callup. Aviles hit his ninth of the season and Gordon hit his 16th.

Shealy laced a run-scoring double in the fifth off Garcia, boosting his RBI total to 16.

The last time the Royals were in fourth place was on Aug. 11. The Cleveland Indians were last at the time.
